Why We Use PHO Extraction and Cured Cannabis
In the world of cannabis extraction, the internet and social media worlds are filled with fodder on “the best extraction method.” If all you ever did was read Twitter, you might come away thinking you had to purchase $120/gram hash rosin every day. The problem with that is it misses a few key extraction points, as well as…ahem, price, and we’re here to clear this up. Propane Hash Oil (PHO) has been around since the original “BHO” basement days, but only recently recognized for its superior extract quality.
Here’s why we use PHO:
1. Superior Flavor and Terpene Retention
Propane’s unique selectivity characteristics and lower boiling point compared to butane allow propane to capture a broader spectrum of terpenes during the extraction process. Terpenes are the compounds responsible for the unique flavors and aromas of cannabis. This results in a product that mirrors the full flavor profile of the cured flower, making PHO extracts a favorite for connoisseurs seeking rich, authentic taste. Curing is an important step for cannabis products that results in a less harsh and more complex taste, and a True-to-Strain experience.
2. Selective and Versatile Extraction
Unlike ice water hash and rosin, which rely on crude mechanical methods, PHO extraction is highly selective. It isolates desirable cannabinoids and terpenes while leaving behind unwanted substances like lipids, fats, and waxes. While rosin salesman boast about it’s “solventless” methodology they hide the fact that heating and smashing cannabis is not a selective process and will not remove undesirables. The post-processing of PHO extracts allow it to be refined further, separating cannabinoids and terpenes into pure forms. The end result is a versatile extract that can be tailored to create any desired formulation.
3. Purity and Safety
While solventless methods like Rosin are often marketed as "clean" alternatives, they can carry hidden contaminants like pesticides or impurities from the plant material. PHO extraction, on the other hand, leaves behind contaminants due to its selectivity. If any contaminants are extracted, they can be removed through advanced remediation techniques, such as CRC (Color Remediation Column) filtration. This ensures that the final product is pure, safe, and compliant with strict regulatory standards. *Note, we do not use CRC, as our flower is tested beforehand, and morever it can throw off the flavor profile*
Concerns about residual solvents in PHO or BHO products are unfounded. Every California cannabis product is tested for residual solvents, and we post our results (can find on or Instagram). Every time our results are “ND” or Non-Detected for residual solvents. In general, Legal and professionally produced extracts are rigorously purged of solvents to safe levels—often below detectable limits. For perspective, terpenes, which make up 5-10% of many extracts, are technically hydrocarbon solvents themselves and present a greater potential harm than the trace amounts of residual solvent allowed in legal products.
4. The "Live" Misconception
"Live" products—made from cannabis that is harvested and frozen immediately—are celebrated for their high terpene levels. However, not all terpenes are beneficial or enjoyable. The volatile compounds retained in live products can result in harsh, grassy flavors, and some may even be irritating or harmful when inhaled. Cured products, on the other hand, deliver a flavor profile consistent with the cannabis flower, offering a smoother and more enjoyable experience.
5. Challenges of Rosin Extraction
Rosin, often lauded for being solventless, is not without its drawbacks. Many strains do not "wash" well in ice water hash processes, resulting in limited product selection and lower yields. Unfortunately, lower yields and less-efficient processes means higher price tags for the consumer. Additionally, Rosin often contains higher levels of lipids, fats, and waxes, which can diminish purity and affect the overall experience.
6. Sustainability and Innovation
PHO and BHO methods are at the forefront of cannabis innovation. Their precision and efficiency ensure minimal waste and maximum yield. With these methods, we can create a diverse range of products—from flavorful sauces to highly concentrated distillates—all while maintaining safety and consistency.
